The DNR lists the late archery and late antlerless segments through January 1, 2027, with the Lower Peninsula December firearm season replacing older muzzleloader layouts. Check eligible deer management units, equipment rules and mandatory harvest reporting in the DNR digest.

The calendar is not arbitrary from a hunting standpoint. The October 1 archery opener lands in the early pre rut, when deer are still on food driven summer and early fall patterns and mature bucks are largely nocturnal. The best archery hunting of the year usually comes several weeks later, in the last days of October and the first week of November, when the seeking and chasing phase puts bucks on their feet in daylight.
The November 15 firearm opener follows the typical early-to-mid-November breeding peak in many areas, which can affect buck visibility. It also coincides with the tail end of the corn harvest in many years, and in a wet fall it can arrive while fields are still standing. That combination, peak breeding plus standing corn plus heavy hunting pressure, is the single most important variable in a southern Michigan firearm season.
The December archery segment and the late antlerless seasons are a different hunt again. By then the fields are bare, the rut is over except for a brief second estrus, and deer are keyed almost entirely to food and thermal cover. Hunters who treat late season like November are usually disappointed. Hunters who find the best remaining food next to the best remaining cover are not.
